The Ultimate Guide To Choosing The Perfect Roman Blinds For Your Home

Roman blinds have been a popular window treatment for over 2,000 years, since before the Roman Empire. Mainly, because they’re both elegant and functional. When it comes to choosing the perfect roman blinds to match the style for home, there are a few things you need to take into consideration. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know for the best.

Blockout vs Light Filtering Roman Blinds

Blockout Roman Blinds

Blockout Roman Blind Example
Blockout roman blinds are made with our range of fabric that eliminates almost all light.

Benefits:
  • A good option for blocking out light
  • Provides great insulation from outside temperatures
  • Low maintenance
  • Durable and long lasting
Perfect For:
  • Bedrooms
  • Theatre/Lounge Rooms
Pro Tips:
For the best blockout results, choose “Above Window” when choosing where to install your blind.

Light Filtering Roman Blinds

Light Filtering Roman Blind Example
Light Filtering roman blinds block out harsh light from the sun, but provide a natural glow for your room.

With these blinds, the view from inside to out, or outside to inside is impeded. Meaning, you cannot see through clearly.

You will still be able to see object outlines, just not clearly. Similar to frosted glass.

Benefits:
  • Fabric diffuses and softens light
  • Provides some daytime and nighttime privacy
  • Low maintenance
  • Durable and long lasting
Perfect For:
  • Living areas where complete light blockout or privacy is not required
  • Office spaces with internal windows (windows that faces into another room)

How Do Roman Blinds Work?

Roman blinds use fabric panels that are designed to pleat when raised. Cords run up the back of the blind, and pull it up at the pleats when lifted.

Where Can Roman Blinds Be Installed?

How and where you install your roman blinds can make a big difference to the look and feel of your room.
If you have any questions at all, our experienced team is available on 1300 772 807 to give expert advice.
Here are the options when it comes to installing roman blinds:

Above Window

Above Window Roman Blind Example
This is our recommended option. The blind is attached to the plaster above your window.
When stacked open, roman blinds still occupy 300mm of space. By installing the blind 150-200mm above your window, you’re making sure the blind won’t cover your window when open.
Roman blinds protrude 40mm out from where they are installed. When installed above the architrave, the fabric will sit very close to the architrave and blockout the most light.

On Architrave

On Architrave Roman Blinds Example
Roman blinds can also be installed directly onto the architrave.
When stacked open, the roman blind will cover some of the window.
The blind will stick 40mm out from the architrave.
Avoid this option if your architrave is less than 60mm wide

What about recess fit?

We don’t offer roman blinds to be installed in your windows recess. This is generally an industry standard as windows can be out of square.

4 Common Roman Blind Mistakes

Here are 4 of the most common roman blind mistakes to avoid!

Mistake #1: Different Install Heights

If all your roman blinds are installed at different heights in the room, it can look disjointed and chaotic. We recommend installing all your roman blinds at the same height for a polished and uniform look.

Mistake #2: Not Realising They Protrude 40mm

Roman blinds will protrude 40mm from where they are installed. This is why we recommend to install them above your window, so that the fabric will hang close to the frame.

Mistake #3: Going Hard Against Corners

Having your roman blind butting up against a corner is a common mistake. If you do this the blind has the potential to rub against the wall and wear out faster. On top of this, your skirting boards will prevent you from having a blind that goes all the way to the floor.

Mistake #4: Not Installing High Enough Above Inward Opening Doors

If you install a roman blind above an opening door, you need to ensure it’s high enough to allow the door to open. Remember, a fully stacked roman blind will occupy about 300mm of space.
